Elephant Attacks Elephants can be Dangerous

The people finally brought this tempermental elephant under control by chaining it to a palm tree. The van was a write-off.

While the passagers were definitely frantic; the drivers actions in this situation was the right one. The elephant was only interested in food that the passangers may have been carrying. If the driver had tried to escape while the elephant was still so close to the vehicle; it could have been fatal.

It is foolhardy to test your luck. The best solution when confronted with a wild elephant is to stay still or withdraw. The rider and bike were unharmed.
