Visas for tourists can be easily obtained online using the excellent Sri Lankan government Electronic Travel Authorization System.

This Short Visit visa costs between $15-30 per adult depending on your country of citizenship. The visa is valid for 30 days from the date of first arrival in Sri Lanka. The visa is a double-entry type which means that you can use it more than once to enter the country provided you do so within the 30 day period. You can also obtain your visa on arrival at the airport or from a Sri Lankan embassy but this is a more tedious process. Getting an online visa is strongly recommended.
