Sigiriya Rock Everything You Need to Know About Sigiriya

View of Sigiriya today

Sigiriya is located in central Sri Lanka. Its key attraction is the spectacular Sigiriya Rock Fortress built nearly 1,600 years ago by King Kashyapa. Its centerpiece was a towering 600-foot-high rock painted white to create the illusion of a radiant cloud floating above the surrounding countryside. The rock's surface was painted with hundreds of beautiful frescoes of celestial nymphs, and a sphinx-like lion guarded the entrance to the king's spectacular Sky Palace atop the rock. But alas, Sigiriya was a beacon of culture and civility for a mere 15 years before it was abandoned and became a forgotten footnote in history, until rediscovered in 1831 by a British army officer on an elephant hunt.
